An Interview With James Tingle, Author Of Mervano

Hi and welcome to an interview with Jame Tingle, author of Mervano. James is from Huddersfield and has written four novels to date – three of which form a trilogy. Mervano is is fourth comedy detective novel with a sci-fantasy twist.

What is one thing people wouldn’t usually know about you?

I like playing guitar and used to play quite a lot but recently haven’t been doing so as much as I’m spending most of the time writing and trying to promote the books! I did enjoy it though and need to get back into it one day.

How important are the names of your characters?

I think character names can be important as if the particular characters you come up with stick in peoples’ minds, you don’t want it to be some name you hate or anything. Also, for fantasy and sci-fi, you have to think of odd, interesting, made up sort of names and so they may need to have a quirky edge to them or even possibly sound menacing or sweet depending on the personality of the character. It needs some thought definitely.

How did you choose a title for your book?

Well, my new fantasy-comedy novel, Mervano, ended up with that title as the main character, who is a moody New York cop, is called Paul Mervano and so the title is his last name. I also like how it is short and punchy and has a bit of impact and attitude I suppose and I think it looks good on the front cover that way.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

I suppose one hazard is that you are sat down a lot and that can lead to getting a little plump if you’re not too careful. I have actually started doing the odd bit of running nowadays just to try and keep fit and to make sure I’m not always sat down in a chair writing or reading- so that’s good!

Have you ever wished you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so, what?

I did want to be in a band for a while and had a few practices with musicians at university but I don’t think that would have gone very far and I don’t think life on the road would have suited me. I never even played in a band at all so it never got past a bedroom jam session in the end…probably for the best!

What is the biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

The first book I wrote, Head of an Apostle, was hard as there was quite a bit of research into various places and technological/science type things and it seemed to take ages. Mervano, the newest one, was much easier and was fun to write as it is a light hearted type book and so has lots of dialogue which tends to be quicker to write than dense narrative tends to be…

What is the strangest thing you have ever had to do to promote a book?

It wasn’t something I had to do but something I chose to do and it wasn’t that strange but maybe a little unorthodox. I basically printed off lots of letters about my book with details about it and where to buy etc. till I had bags and bags full of letters and then went round different local streets delivering them door to door. I got a few sales and a review but it took a long time to amass the letters and delivering them wasn’t too fun either with dogs running to get you and people shooting you dirty looks from windows! It’s one way of spreading the word I suppose and may work in some areas better than others.

Tea, coffee, water, juice, beer, or wine … what do you prefer when writing?

I suppose I drink a cup of tea if its afternoon or water and then a bottle of Berocca vitamin drink if its evening and occasionally a coffee in the past but not much nowadays as it keeps you from sleeping…beer can create some good ideas on occasion but drunken writing is probably a bad idea!
