Meet Hassan Osman, a writer and author of non fiction books. The full title of Hassan’s lastest book is “Write Your Book on the Side: How to Write and Publish Your First Nonfiction Kindle Book While Working a Full-Time Job (Even if You Don’t Have a Lot of Time and Don’t Know Where to Start)”, which probably sounds familiar to the majority of writers these days.
What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?
I publish a series of books under a pen name that no one (except my wife) knows about!
What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?
It was a 5-star review from the #1 reviewer on all of Amazon, where she stated that my book was “specific and comprehensive without being wordy or promotional,” and that she found “every chapter useful” and “it had no sections that I just skimmed through.”
How did you choose a title for your book?
I follow a very methodical process to write the titles of my nonfiction books. I talk about the process in detail in my “Write Your Book on the Side” book, but here’s the general idea: Step 1 is to choose a general topic based on interest, experience, the market, and how closely related it is to my job. Step 2 is to niche-down the topic by narrowing down the target audience and narrowing down the outcome. Step 3 is to choose a title & subtitle combination that does four things: grabs attention, explains the outcome, defines the audience, and contains keywords. And finally, step 4 is to test and iterate on the title through feedback and surveys so that I can refine it.
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
I have one main golden rule for writing nonfiction books: write a really, really useful book.
That’s it. A simple but very profound rule that should be every author’s North Star throughout the entire book-writing process.
That’s because readers are the only entity that matters. They are the ones who buy your book with the expectation that they will get more value from it than the amount they paid for it in cash and time. So don’t disappoint them!
Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?
Primarily coffee (black), but recently, I’ve been switching to tea because the latter has a few more benefits.
Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?
Absolutely! The biggest one is procrastination. It takes me a lot of time to get a book done because I keep coming up with excuses not to write. Like checking Facebook. Or watching Netflix.
