Meet Sally Jenkins, author of Bedsit 3

This week I’d like you to meet Sally Jenkins, a UK based author who has written a debut novel, Bedsit 3, a tale of murder, mystery and love – which also features a body in the garden ….! She has also published a short story collection and two non-fiction books on writing and self publishing.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I am a campanologist or church bell ringer. It’s been a lifelong hobby but people are always surprised when they find out. And no, we’re not a bunch of Quasimodos! Famous bell ringers include Ed Balls, Jo Brand, Alan Titchmarsh and Victoria Wood.

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

The review that most thrilled me was for my grip-lit novel, Bedsit Three. The reviewer said, “A psychological why dunnit reminiscent of Barbara Vine/ Ruth Rendell.” What an accolade to be compared to that great lady!

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

There are the obvious physical hazards such as hunched shoulders and aching wrists but there’s also the people watching addiction. When I’m out in a restaurant or café I have to sit with my back to the wall facing into the room so I can watch what’s going on. If the tables are close enough to listen in, so much the better. Writers have to get their ideas from somewhere!

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Getting into the head of my villain and working out what motivates him. And imagining how it feels to bury and then dig up a body.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

When working on a novel you must write something EVERY day, even if it’s only a couple of sentences. Otherwise you will, literally, lose the plot. Little and often is the key.

What is the book that you wished you had written

Mr Two Bomb by William Coles. As well as being a page turning story about the effect on ordinary people of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it also taught me a lot about the history and politics of that time.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Tea. I have a favourite mug the size of a flower vaseIf

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

Not in the garden, as happens in Bedsit Three. I would dissolve the body in acid so it completely disappears – this may require much research to find the best acid and the best container in which to do the dissolving. I think they did something similar in Breaking Bad.
