An interview with Kiran Prasad, author of A Mindful Move: Feel at home again

This week I’d like to welcome Kiran Prasad to the Thursday Throng hotseat. Kiran was born in India, grew up in England and has moved 29 times. Every time she had to begin the process of building a home again even in places she wouldn’t choose to be.  She has shared her experience of relocation, managing upheaval and beginning again somewhere new in her book A Mindful Move that teaches others how to ease the pain.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?  

I can recite Middle English. At college, for my English Literature degree, I had to memorise parts of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. For some strange reason it has stayed with me since!

How did you choose a title for your book?

I didn’t choose my title it chose me! I started off with a different title Neither Here Nor There: How to transition after a move. But when I was listening to one of the interview recordings for the book, I came across the word “mindful” in relation to moving. This word had been appearing often in my life at that time. Just then, the words A Mindful Move popped into my head. It was an aha moment and I took it as a sign that this was meant to be my title.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

As an author, you can get so immersed in the book, in the zone, that you forget to eat, drink, take breaks, or even sleep. If you’re not careful, it can affect your health like it did with me.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

I found it hard to set myself deadlines at first. Since I self- published my book, I had all the time in the world to complete it. I would still be trying to finish it if I hadn’t finally set a deadline.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?  

Get a domain name in your name as soon as possible and start blogging and learning to use all types of social media. As creative individuals we focus on just the writing of the book. However, we also have to learn how to market the book. I wish I had started this much sooner.

How do you remain sane while working?

I try to take one day at a time.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I get my inspiration through everyday life, especially painful experiences that I have overcome. I like helping others overcome those same experiences.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

I admire Eckhart Tolle and I wish I had written The Power of Now. This is because it is such an important, influential book that has helped many people.

Do you have any favourite resources you would like to share with our readers?

For book marketing tips, I have found the work of Joanna Penn, Jane Freidman, Derek Murphy, Stefan Pylarinos, and the Alliance for Independent Authors (ALLi) to be very helpful.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Although I drink both tea and coffee when I write, I have a preference for tea, especially Chai tea. It must be my British and Indian roots that draw me to it.

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

Getting distracted by Facebook when I should be writing!
