The Nathalie Thompson Interview

nathalie thompsonWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I’m an introvert and a home-body. I’m never lonely when I’m by myself. My kids were watching a TV show the other day in which some of the characters were snowboarding, and I made a comment about how that was definitely not my idea of a fun holiday. My seven-year-old looked at me and said: “I know what your idea of a good holiday is. You would want to be curled up with a warm blanket and a really big pile of books.” The boy knows me too well. 🙂

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Emma Watson. She’s strong, poised, and feisty. Although I have to say I had a hard time with her doing the American accent in The Perks of Being a Wallflower – not because she didn’t do it well, but because I figure that if one has been blessed with a lovely English accent, it’s just wrong not to use it! I have a thing about English accents. I really want to visit England someday, but at the same time, what would undoubtedly happen is that I’d step off a plane at Heathrow, everyone around me would sound like Patrick Stewart, and I would immediately melt into a giggling pile of useless goo.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

Well, I can honestly say that, despite what I was told about the life-shattering importance of higher mathematics, I have NEVER used calculus since high school, so definitely not that. The one thing I did learn in high school that I still use every single day is 9th grade typing. If you want to go earlier than that, I’d say learning to read. I keep telling my kids that if they know how to read well, they will have the ability to learn anything that they want to learn about in life. Literacy is the greatest gift anyone can ever receive because it opens the door to so many new opportunities and experiences.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

I am a defiant, unrepentant caffeine addict. I fully admit my coffee addiction. I can’t function without my morning fix, and my kids know not to start with the daily craziness until mom’s had at least one cup in the morning.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Sometimes I forget to eat. When I’m fully immersed in writing or editing, I tend to completely lose track of time. I can go all day without eating sometimes, which isn’t a good thing because I sometimes get faint when that happens.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Just get it done! The first draft is not your end-product. Ever. But that first draft is the sticking point for so many aspiring writers who want their “baby” to be perfect from the moment they start. Let your perfectionism go, and just get the words and ideas out. You will massage and fine-tune them later when you start editing and rewriting. But you have to get over that first hurdle and get the first draft done.

Have you ever written naked?

Are you kidding me? I live in Canada. It gets far too cold here for that sort of thing! 😉
