I can’t really tell you that, it would be too embarrassing, although it’s also very funny.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

It requires such concentration and commitment of everything possess, I find I don’t speak for day, or weeks, or years and my voice box seizes up.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

How do you remain sane while working?

Writing keeps me sane!

Where do you find your inspiration?

At the moment it’s wild-life; leopardesses, giraffes, jelly-fish, elephants, snakes … what a lot they have to say to us.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

Reading and writing have been very useful.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

Butchers’ Crossing, by John Williams, it’s perfect.

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

Not TV, but on R4’s Today Programme, ‘Is that you Maureen?’ takes some beating.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

I suppose it would have to be a disused Cornish mine but I don’t know how I’d get it there.
