janet leesThe Janet Lees Interview

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

That I’m an introvert.

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

After my horrendously nerve-wracking first reading, a young woman came up to me and said ‘You’ve made me want to write poetry’.

Have you ever written naked?

Actually no, but it’s on my to-do list – I was recently researching the habits of writers for a workshop, and apparently getting naked is quite a common one – Kafka and DH Lawrence being two notable examples.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

As we were often told by the tutors on the creative writing MA at Lancaster, if you want to write good poetry, read good poetry.

How do you remain sane while working?

This sounds a bit Pollyanna-ish, but it really does keep me sane and positive – writing a list of things to be grateful for first thing every morning. And coffee.

Do you have any favourite resources you would like to share with our readers? is a fantastic treasure chest for poets, and you can sign up to receive a daily poem by email.

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

Absolutely Fabulous, ‘France’, the wine-tasting.
