Meeting Damhnait Monaghan, Flash Fiction category short list

In April each year the Hysterectomy Association begins its annual writing competition, Hysteria. This year I decided to showcase as many of the winning authors who wanted to take part in my Thursday Throng interviews. After all, you never know just where the next best-seller might emerge from. Today, for our first interview, I’d like to welcome Damhnait Monaghan, one of our 10 Flash Fiction category short listed winners.

The Dahmnait Monaghan Interview

damhnait monaghanWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

How to pronounce my first name!

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

I had a short story accepted for publication by an American journal and the editor described it as “really wonderful”.

What did the worst review you ever had say about you and your work?

Another journal rejected the same short story. It wasn’t so much what they said about it, but the fact that they picked it apart line by line to demonstrate how the story wasn’t credible and concluded by suggesting I throw in a murder at the end! It was a lesson in the importance of finding the right home for stories and the fact that not everyone will “get” your writing.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Loneliness and too much snacking. Internet buddies help with the former.

Have you ever written naked?

Not yet….

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Committing to it. Showing up. Doing the work. I still struggle a bit with this.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

There are so many I could choose, but the most recent is When the Saints by Sarah Mian. It’s a debut novel set on the east coast of Canada. The dialogue zings and there is a five year old character named Janis who steals the show.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

Under my ironing pile. No one would ever find it.

WHY ‘THE THURSDAY THRONG’?

These posts are called The Thursday Throng in honour of the throng that waits eagerly outside the book store when a new author is doing a book signing event or appearance. On this website it takes the form of a ‘Meet the Author‘ online event with some information about our author’s latest book and an interview. If you would like to take part in the Thursday Throng then why not visit Thursday Throng Author Interview Guidelines to find out more.
