An interview with Nic Weissman, author of The Orb of Wrath

Hello, and welcome to this week’s Thursday Throng author interview. Today, I’m pleased to be hosting Nic Weissman, author of fantasty adventure novel The Orb of Wrath. This is the first book in the Merchant’s Destiny series and according to Amazon it’s a fun cocktail combining fantasy, intrigue and adventure in a world where nothing is exactly as it seems.

The Nic Weissman Interview

nic weissmanWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

After this interview, nothing! Now, seriously, there is only one other person in the world who knows who Nic Weissman is (right, it is a pen name). Of course, there is a human being behind the label who fights, works, suffers, enjoys and sometimes succeeds.

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

I am thankful to have received many good reviews. Let me highlight one of them from the Write-Escape author Peg Glover: ‘The Orb of Wrath is a compelling, well-written and meticulously crafted epic fantasy novel. Nic Weissman has proven himself to be a gifted storyteller with a vivid imagination and world-building skills.

How did you choose a title for your book?

The process went like this. I had five options to choose from. My first call was title X. But I didn’t want to rush the decision and after thinking about it longer I was inclined for another one. Then I had the happy idea: let the people decide. I provided the five options to my community in facebook and they voted. Interestingly they went for the same one that my gut was indicating in the first place. Lesson learnt: trust your instincts.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Writing is great. And publishing is now accessible to everyone thanks to this revolution of the self-publishing. However, the main challenge remains: how to sell books. If you want to become a writer, be ready to spend a significant amount of your time and energy in the promotion process. Fortunately there are good and intelligent people out there that might help you.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

Without a doubt, the birth of my first daughter. Even if I was ready, expecting something amazing, I was totally overwhelmed. I was so taken by the emotion that… Sorry, I don’t have words to describe how I felt. It was simply incredible. The miracle of life.

Are you jealous of other writers?

Oh sure! But in a good way. One thing that I find difficult is to come up with names. I mean four, five, seven names are ok. But when I need to come up with thirty, forty or many more, I really have a challenge. The master on this, as in everything else in fantasy, was Tolkien. As he was a philologist he went as far as to make up a language to derive consistent names from there. I wish I would have such knowledge and skill.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

One of the best teachers I ever had taught me not to believe the teachers. He taught math and he would say that if a teacher wants to state something he will have first to prove it to his class. Not all subjects of life support a QOD (quod erat demonstrandum) process. But I learnt that you need to have critical thinking and not just take whatever others deliver to you, no matter if those are your parents, your teachers, the media or the government. Think by yourself!

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

I am a soccer fan and my team is Real Madrid. I would say the Sergio Ramos’ goal in 2014 Champions League final. That is like the Europe´s championship; the closest thing to SuperBowl outside football (perhaps an even bigger event). This was the 10th championship for my team and turned them into the best soccer team of all times. They are also the most valuable team in the world of any sport (about 4 b$ or so).

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

To overthink.
