Meeting KP Smith, author of Growing Pains: Kendra’s diaries

Meet KP Smith, the author of Growing Pains: Kendra’s diaries – the first in a 3 book series. it was her love of reading that ignited her decision to write and when not reading or writing you’ll find her enjoying many other hobbies in her home town of New Orleans.

The KP Smith Interview

kp smithWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I love to sing in the shower. I can’t sing at all so it’s one the only place I can do it without being self-conscious.

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

One of my closest friends daughter, Amaya read Growing Pains; Kendra’s Diaries. She loved the book. But more importantly she told me she had an interest in writing and seeing me fulfilling my dream has encouraged her to pursue hers.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Yes. It’s been surprisingly challenging to choose names.  What’s in a name? Everything.  I can’t tell you how I have laboured over the choices. Does it fit? Is it in line with the character’s “character”.

And don’t talk about if I need a first and last name. Does the first and last name fit? Does it sound good? Never would have thought choosing a name would entail so much.

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

When my two sons leave home for college I’m going to set up a program and tutor less privileged elementary school kids in math.  There are very few things more satisfying than seeing the light of “understanding” come into a child’s eyes.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Quvenzhané Wallis can play me as child, have to get back to you about a teen actress, young adult Keke Palmer, and a tie for adult between Kerry Washington and Viola Davis.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

To keep on going despite the negative thoughts telling me I was wasting my time.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

Being a mom it has taught me what unconditional love, patience and acceptance really means. It makes me want to be better and do better for them.

Where do you find your inspiration?

As I grow older I’ve redefined my definition of success. For me if I do my best then it’s a success. Even if I “fail” by the world’s standards chances are I’ve learned something and experienced something I otherwise wouldn’t have.  No room for regrets and that inspires me to keep moving forward.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

It’s something I tell my sons all the time; LEARN HOW TO LEARN BECAUSE WHEN YOU DO YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.

Have you had to learn new skills and tricks or attempted impossible feats in order to get a book finished?

It wasn’t the book but my website. Due to financial constraints (raising and educating two sons is not “cheap”) I was going to have to wait a few months to be able to pay someone to set up my site. I didn’t want to wait so I decided to do it myself.

I purchased my domain name and a host site.  The extent of my technical savvy was typing and surfing the net. I became extremely frustrated trying to figure it out.

My youngest son, Christian, passed by me one of the many evenings I sat with steam coming out of my head and said “mom go on You Tube. They show you how to do everything on You Tube.”

Few weeks, many hours and tutorials later I got it done.  There were times I wanted to throw my PC on the floor no doubt but I persevered.  It was such a satisfying and fulfilling accomplishment.

I gave Christian a big thank you for his You Tube tip but couldn’t resist the teaching moment while I proudly showed them my site. “See I told you; LEARN HOW TO LEARN BECAUSE WHEN YOU DO YOU CAN DO ANYTHING.”

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

I live and am from NOLA (New Orleans, LA). We live and breathe our Saints football team. Our team used to be so bad we wore bags. I can honestly say I never thought we would win a Super Bowl in my lifetime. My favourite TV moment is when Tracy Porter made the interception that sealed our win in Super Bowl XLIV.

At the time I’m doing this interview Mad Men’s series finale is about a week and a half away. I’m highly anticipating how Matthew Weiner will end Don Draper’s on screen life. Don Draper just might be my favourite TV character of all time.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Coffee preferably Starbucks white chocolate mocha soy with whip.
