Meeting co authors, Erin Kurt and Laara Exsnar

Please welcome two yummy authors to the Thursday Throng spotlight this week. Erin and Laara are the mother and daughter team behind the Celia and Cedric Yummy Adventures. The idea behind the books is a series where the characters would model positive character traits and learn how to make and eat yummy, nutrient-dense food (or as Laara likes to say, “Nutrilicious© Food!”).

The Erin and Laara Kurt Interview

erin and laaraWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Erin – That I’m addicted to Marmite.  I eat Marmite Cashew nuts, Marmite Rice Cakes, Marmite Crisps (Chips) and Marmite on toast with avacado – I crave the stuff!  I saw a lip balm in Marmite flavour, but I don’t think I’ll go that far.

Laara – That  whenever I make my own cookies or buy store bought ones I smash the bag on the floor so that the cookies break into little pieces.  That’s why I love animal crackers, because they’re all different, small shapes.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Oh yeah.  They are like our kids. We feel like they are part of the family. We look at them everyday and we just smile.  Mom actually came up with the names.  She knew that the names had to come from health or anatomy.  She looked at the hair on her arm one day and the hair reminded her of cilia. Immediately, the name Celia came into her mind.  Then, mom went to bed and woke up saying, “I’ve got the boy’s name! It’s Cedric!”  We don’t know where these names came from, they just popped into mom’s head how a tune or lyrics often pop into a songwriters head.  We just love the names!

How did you choose a title for your book?

We always begin writing our stories with one of Mom’s recipes in mind and usually the name of the recipe becomes the title for the book.

How do you remain sane while working?

With two young kiddies I definitely have to be organized and disciplined.  When they are at school I set myself at least 1 main task to accomplish that day and then I feel great about myself. I also pre-plan my weekly dinner menus.  This means I always have a list of meals I can cook depending on our mood that day.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

Erin – For me, it was the year I moved to France when I was 25 years old.  It was a dream come true and literally changed my entire life.

Laara – When I follow Divine intuition then I always have the best experiences.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Our inspiration comes from mom’s yummy recipes and my childhood memories. But, it also comes from our many years of being school teachers and seeing what interests kids and what they really need.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Water and herbal tea.
