Meeting Greg Archer, author of Grace Revealed

This week I’d like to welcome author, editor, journalist and cultural moderator Greg Archer to the Thursday Throng author interview. His work has appeared in the The Huffington Post, The San Francisco Examiner, Oprah Magazine, The Advocate, Palm Springs Life,  VIA Magazine, Bust, Jetset Extra, The Sydney Morning Herald and other media and TV outlets.

In Grace Revealed Greg explores the effect of Stalin’s mass deportations of Polish citizens in the 1940’s on his own family; this event is one of the most under-reported events in history.

The Greg Archer Interview

greg archerWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

That I am, perhaps, more shy than one would realize. Everyone else seems to know about my endless asking for “signs” from the Universe.

How did you choose a title for your book?

I felt strongly that GRACE should be in there… and then the other… (REVEALED) just came to me in the form of another person…. And the two together captured the story and essence.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Mood swings. Most writers and creatives I know tend to “channel” their work in some way or another; we’re tapping into a deeper part of ourselves and that can be really amazing inner work—to release into the world something very big. I find that the times between those longer creative events can be tricky. At times, we don’t quite feel ourselves or that something is off. It’s a curious thing to notice and manage.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Bradley Cooper

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

FEELING all of the emotional things. The book uncovered an under-reported part of history—the mass deportation of Polish people in the 1940s, which my family survived. That odyssey, as well as tracing my own family’s particular story, became, and to some extent still is, a deeply engrossing experience on an emotional level. It felt as if I was haunted and hunted by the ghosts of the past—that ache to tell the story was very deep and some of it still lingers.

How do you remain sane while working?

By trying NOT to remain sane. It’s not a sane thing to sit there and excavate from the walls of one’s creative soul. Not really. It’s constant digging, depending on the material. So, I guess the answer is… Have discipline— that helps (DAILY/ weekly, etc.) but allow yourself to go completely MAD… because in just ALLOWING THAT… you have a chance of it not lasting THAT long. I smile at that thought. Onward …

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

WELL, one of the best has been in the presence of Bernese Mountain Dogs; others in the presence of people whose love I feel and I love, too. But the BEST? Well, I guess that wold be marrying myself in a little Cessna above the Pacific Ocean… There was a minister and a best man and everything. I felt strongly that before we can marry another, we must first… marry ourselves and I wanted to have some kind of marker/ ritual on that front.

sounds like an interesting read – glad at least some in your family were able to persevere. Most of what I know of Stalin is from reading Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag” – I still recall the moment when I realized that his book was really a requiem for those he named. Sometimes it’s just bad luck to have lived in the shadow of tyranny.
