An Interview with Ryan Hartung, author of Lightning: Book 1 (World’s Divide)

This week I’d like to welcome Ryan Hartung to the Thursday Throng. He’s the author of four books altogether, three in the World’s Divide series so far and another titled Spurious. The background to World’s Divide is of worldwide war between the East and the West driven by the cataclysmic divide between the richer western nations and the poorer East.  However, shadowed behind the veil of impending war is new evidence suggesting the Greek and Roman gods of legend might have been real after all….. Lightning is the first of the series.

The Ryan Hartung Interview

ryan hurtungWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you? It’s kind of dorky, but I have an extensive Transformer collection that spills into more rooms of the house than my wife would like. What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work? I’m not sure about the best or worst, but I did have a review that garnered 3 stars out of 5 where they said they loved the book. That one left me a little puzzled. If you love the book why only 3 stars? Are the names of your characters important to you? The names are important to me. Many times the names come from people I know even though the characters are different. It helps me to start building my characters off someone I already know. How did you choose a title for your book? For the World’s Divide series, I have been choosing the titles based on the ancient relics they are finding and what god or goddess they are attributed to, so that makes the titles for this series at least somewhat easy to figure out. Are there any occupational hazards to being an author? Besides it being a fairly significant time drain on my life, not that I can think of. Most of my TV watching, except for sports (Go Big Red and Buckeyes!) has pretty much disappeared now that I’m writing more and promoting my works. Have you ever written naked? Very interesting question and the not so interesting answer is no, but maybe I’ll have to try it when the wife and kids are gone some time. What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book? For me the challenge is not the writing at all, it’s the marketing. Starting out on your own in pretty daunting when there’s no one in your corner to really help you out except family and friends, but many people have done it before. Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing? Nothing’s better than a good beer while writing, however you can’t have too many or you get sloppy and sleepy. If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body? If I ever committed the perfect murder, which I’m hoping never happens, there definitely wouldn’t be a body to find. Being a chemist I would definitely find some way of destroying ALL of the evidence. J

Linda, thank you for the opportunity to post an interview on your site! If anyone has any questions I’d be more than happy to answer them. Book 1 is free for most e-readers!
