An Interview With Carol Casada, Author of Westmore: Betrayal

Carol Casada is with me on the Thursday Throng today. She’s the author of the Westmore series and Betrayal is the 5th book. She’s a girl from Virginia who set out on her journey to becoming a writer from Ringgold. She’s now released four other books in the Westmore series and is a fully fledged indie author.

The Review

Westmore BetrayalWestmore: Betrayal is the 5th book in the Westmore series. The writing is deft and well-handled and the plot hinges on the title word, ‘Betrayal’. Throughout the book there is evidence of perceived and actual betrayal’s which the various characters have to deal with. Carol has an excellent eye for drama in the most unlikely of places, allowing us to see into the heart of an extended family almost at war with itself.

At the novel’s core is the revelation that a death in the family was covered up by one of the siblings and that it was their father who had caused it. The repercussions of this extend far and wide and across the generations as well as family and friends end up revealing things and secrets about themselves and their relationships that should, perhaps, have stayed hidden.

This is a book the reader must pay attention to as there are so many threads it can be hard to remember who is who and which drama belongs to which people. The book is the culmination of several earlier story lines and readers may decide they need to visit earlier books to see how the situations characters find themselves in came about.

The Carol Casada Interview

carol casadaWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Let’s see, there’s so many things, but I think one thing is I’m a bit of a tomboy. I know I don’t look like one based on my profile pictures. But I like to play video games and watch sports. My favourite sports are football, Nascar, and WWE.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

As a writer you spend most of your time at the computer typing away and that can affect your eyes. I’ve strained my eyes a few times because I’ll lose track of the time. Now I take a break every so often to stretch and rest my eyes.

Have you ever written naked?

I can’t say that I have, although it’d probably be fun to do.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

One challenge I face is staying focused and motivated. I’m the type of person who gets distracted easily and a majority of the time I’ll end up doing something else instead of writing.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

I would tell aspiring writers to hang in there. Writing and promoting a book is tough and there are challenges along the way. At times, you’re going to feel like giving up, but you’ve got to continue on with your writing journey.

Are you jealous of other writers?

I hate to say this, but I have to admit I’m envious of authors who write full-time. I’m still working a few other jobs while pursuing a writing career. I applaud these authors who are able to write full-time and get hundreds of reviews. Even though I’ve been writing for 5 years, I still find it hard to get reviews and sell my books.

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

This happened before I was born, but the Who Shot JR storyline on Dallas was one of the biggest moments in TV. My mom was a fan of the show and she was the one who got me hooked on soap operas. When they began showing Dallas reruns on SoapNet, we used to watch them together. I remember one Friday night they were airing the episode for the first time and I wanted to watch it to see if it lived up to its hype, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

I can be lazy at times and that’s a bad habit I wish I didn’t have.
