An interview with Shay West, author of Dangerous Reflections

It’s my great pleasure to introduce Shay West on today’s Thursday Throng author interview. Shay has a doctorate degree in Human Medical Genetics from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. And when she isn’t writing she’s teaching biology classes at  Colorado Mesa University. She is a passionate scientist and loves magic and fantasy.

The Review

There is something special about a book that demonstrates just how important paying attention in class can be. Shay West has used the lessons we learn from history as a significant element of the plot that makes up Dangerous Reflections. Throughout the book our protagonist, Alexis Davenport, must overcome multiple challenges aided only by her extensive knowledge and interest in history. When she timeshifts back to key moments in the history of Western Civilisation she is able to take the actions necessary to help save the future we have all lived through.

The book is fast paced enough for any teen to stay interested. It is well written and avoids many of the crutches authors can fall back on. I particularly liked the way Shay was able to combine the typical 21st Century teenager, complete with tantrums, lack of attention and anger with someone who steps up to the mark when they need to. This story was complete, but it didn’t end – there will be more to come and I’m looking forward to other adventures with Alexis.

The Shay West Interview

Shay West PictureWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

That I went through a time where I drank a LOT and did some drugs and almost flunked out of college. Thank goodness I came to my senses and made better choices.

What did the worst review you ever had say about you and your work?

That the characters didn’t resonate and that the enemy isn’t seen, just mentioned. This reviewer said she wouldn’t read the rest of the series. I admit this 2-star review was a bummer but you can’t please everyone with what you write and there will always be someone who doesn’t like it. All of the best-sellers have their fair share of bad reviews. But if the points a reader makes are valid, an author can learn from the reviews rather than being upset.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Hmmm, interesting question. I suppose there could be for authors who write murder mysteries, especially if they take their research a little too seriously. Might be kind of difficult finding an agent from behind bars. As for me, the worst I get is hot legs from the laptop and a stiff elbow from typing all day 😉

Have you ever written naked?

I literally laughed out loud when I read this one. And sadly, I have to say no, I have not written naked. I can’t even write a naked scene in a book let alone sitting in the buff and trying to write a scene. If anyone out there has done this, please let me know if I’m missing out on something spectacular. I’m often the last to know about really awesome fun things and this very well maybe one of them.

Where do you find your inspiration?

From dreams a lot of times. Knowing about the human body also helps (I’m a biology professor). I’ve written a couple of horror short stories that utilize science and biology. Readers can find them on my WattPad profile.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

I live in a desert environment and there are tons of places to hide a body where no one would find it. It wouldn’t take much, just a shovel, maybe a place where there are lots of small rocks, and an arroyo or gully. Either bury the body or cover it with rocks. Of course, if I ever invent a portal or gateway to another world, I’d just take the body there and leave it.
