Well, what can I say, today we have not one but two fabulous authors on the Thursday throng and I’m really pleased to introduce Joanna Kane and Seb Adams co-authors of The Suited Hippy and the Stress Junkie. I also just need to mention that last night Joanna also won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Venus Awards Dorset – congratulations Joanna.
The Suited Hippy and the Stress Junkie is a modern day parable that explores one woman’s journey to wholeness. It is the story of Germaine, who through her own particular work, health and relationship experiences allows us all the opportunity to do a little self-reflection about where we could make a difference not only in our own lives, but in the lives of others too.
Although this book is written to be read by anyone, my feeling is that it will have a particular resonance for women; particularly those who are juggling social and personal expectations of what they could and should achieve, with work and life. It is littered with helpful suggestions about how we could all achieve the final goal of looking back on a life well-lived.
Germaine is social and cultural alchemist for the times we are now living through and if you enjoy reading Paolo Coelho then this book will definitely resonate.
The Joanna Kane and Seb Adams Interview
What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?
SEB: That as a kid I really liked dungeons and dragons role playing game. I would be the dungeon master and loved creating maps of the lands, mythology of the people , poems, riddles and quests for my friends to enjoy. I blame it on being moved to the country when puberty was raging 😉
Joanna: That I am fascinated by the mystery of death and the dying process. I think about what actually happens to us when we have passed over and I am always curious to read of people’s nde’s ( near death experiences ) . Perhaps I am more aware of this or curious about it as I came face to face with my own mortality with a cancer diagnosis 12 years ago.
How did you choose a title for your book?
Joanna: We originally had ‘ The Suited Hippy- Germaine’s story’ but something didn’t feel quite right about it. I went to bed one evening and asked for the name to emerge and at 4am I woke up bolt upright with the words in my head ‘ The Suited Hippy And The Stress Junkie’
It felt right however my under eye bags were testimony the next day to the fact that I couldn’t get back to sleep!
Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?
Joanna: Writing is only one aspect of what I do which suits me down to the ground. I do public speaking and work with teams and individuals in organisations to help them create success of the sustainable variety. I have always loved an audience so the idea of getting out there to promote the book and inspire others in the process works very well for me. It’s the diversity I enjoy.
Have you ever written naked?
Seb: No, but as I did most of the writing in a coffee shop in Westbourne I’m sure the staff and clientele are very glad I didn’t. I like to help people shift perspectives and break down barriers but I’m not sure that that particular social barrier is ready to be broken. I think I will leave Stephen Gough (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-18931494) to blaze that particular Trail.
What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?
Seb: Focus … Having 2 young kids (3 and 5) and a busy life means you have to grab an hour here and there for writing. The book was important but it wasn’t urgent and important and as most people find, you can end up focusing the majority of your time on the urgent/important stuff and then switching off on to the non-urgent, non-important stuff (TV , magazines etc) as down time. It takes a conscious effort to allocate regular time to look at the non-urgent / important stuff.. That’s the area of strategy, vision and leadership and we usually have to consciously create that time for ourselves.
What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?
Seb: An impossible question to answer but one I like to think about J
I’ve had wonderful experiences as a coach helping people break through limiting beliefs sometimes with such palpable effect that I’ve buzzed with energy myself. I’ve loved collaborating on the book and the excitement when ideas and words weave and flow effortlessly but if I was to choose one experience I’d have to cheat and say when Jo and I went traveling around the world for two years in our twenties. It was a time full of experiences, a time of challenge, daring and boundless possibilities. Looking back on it, it reminds me that happiness isn’t found in the stuff that you do or have but in the sharing of it.
Do you have any favourite resources you would like to share with our readers?
Joanna: The most powerful tool I have come across is called the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT – Simple , pain free tool for dealing with a wide gamut of issues and for installing new beliefs..
I think the Law of Attraction is worth exploring as it pertains to the concept that we all have limiting beliefs and concepts that we were brought up with and that by changing these thoughts , we can change our reality. Everything starts out as a thought and in effect we can become the ‘creators’ of our reality by using the power of right thought, visualisation and activating the right feelings.
What is your favourite TV moment of all time?
Seb: I don’t have one .. but as I was sent a clip 2 minutes before I started this and it is a great example of what I love about the power of TV I’ve included it ..it’s from the West Wing and it’s where Bartlett quotes scripture to point out the danger of closed minded thinking.
Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?
Joanna: Yes I love researching property on the internet ( my other name is property porn queen J ) but I can lose a lot of time with it and it’s a habit that definitely needs managing.
