Your LinkedIn Profile is the key to making this business oriented network work for you effectively. With a properly constructed profile you will reinforce the message you are sharing across other parts of the network, ensuring that you are perceived as you wish to be by the audience you hope to work with.

When I read a profile, I scan it for some key elements and if I don’t find them, I know that I’m looking at someone who isn’t a networker here on LinkedIn. The things I’m looking for are:

  1. A good headline that tells me what someone does not their job title
  2. A nice head and shoulders photo of them in business mode
  3. Some connections
  4. A decent summary that tells me more about who they are right now, not what they did in the past.
  5. A couple of recommendations

perfectprofileI thought it might be helpful to put together a brief five step guide to improving your online profile. As long as you already have a good image, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to do the improvements I suggest and if you don’t have an image yet, then why not get a friend or partner to take one of you – against a white or plain background if possible.
