An interview with MB Feeney, author of Honour

This week, after a short break, I’m really pleased to have on the Thursday Throng author MB Feeney and her short story compilation ‘Honour’. She calls herself an ‘army brat’ who finally settled down in Birmingham. She is currently studying for her BA (Hons) in primary teaching and is a serious doodler and chocoholic.  Her publishing career began with two novellas and is currently writing a novel.

honourThe Review

MB Feeney is one of those rare writers who is able to capture one’s imagination and emotion in single, seamless sweep of her pen. Her compilation of stories in this book focuses around a single idea, the stories of the people that put honour above all else and how it impacts on their daily lives and loves. She doesn’t flinch from expressing the sadness of war or the emotional turmoil that decisions taken in a split second can cause for a lifetime. It is 122 pages of undiluted loss and love, triumph and horror and it would be a great read for anyone looking for something to dip and out of for a while, mainly because the stories make you stop and think before you can move on to the next. Well worth reading.

The MB Feeney Interview

mb feeneyWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

This is a tough one as I am quite an open person and am a sharer, but I guess the one thing is the way I stew when I’m angry or annoyed. It’s not very often I lose my temper in a big way, especially when it comes to writing, but when I do, I get very ranty and EVERYTHING bugs me. I feel guilty after, not for what I’ve said, but sometimes the way it’s said.

It doesn’t happen very often though, I’m nice really. Honest J

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

I wish I could draw. Not instead of, but alongside my writing. I’d love to be one of those authors who is able to draw what she sees in her head so people know exactly what I’m on about. I have a friend who is the most amazing artist and I may have to commission her one day to design me a book cover. I’m not actually the most creative of people. Other than my writing, I enjoy photography, but that is very much a hobby and no way a career option.

Are you jealous of other writers?

I wouldn’t say jealous per say, but I do get envious. I read a lot, and I often find myself thinking “why can’t I write like that” or I get ‘cover envy’. Mostly, I am extremely supportive of other indie authors, even when they’re better and more successful than me, only slightly green J

How do you remain sane while working?

I step away. A lot. I get very frustrated with my own writing, particularly dialogue. I can be halfway through a conversation and it suddenly feels bland and wooden. Rather than delete it, I save, close the document, and then walk away whilst a friend has a read through. I read a lot and use this as an escape whenever I feel frustrated or blocked, or I take my camera out for a walk.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

To be honest, the most challenging thing for me is finding the time to physically sit at the computer and write. I’m a mum of 2 kids and a student teacher. I’m in my final year of my degree and the workload is getting more and more. I’m not great with time management at the best of times, so I have to make time to actually write. I’m also easily distracted by things around me and the internet.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

I’d take it to the nearest farm and feed it to the pigs. I learned from the film Snatch that pigs eat anything and it’s one of the best ways to dispose of a body.  Not that I’m planning on killing anyone that is. I’m really very nice, honest!
