Meeting Annie Carter, the author of The Book Beyond Time

This week I’d like to welcome Annie Carter to the first Thursday Throng author interview of 2014. Annie is the author of The Book Beyond Time. The year is 2325 – three hundred years after the Great Catastrophe, which wiped out most of Krinton. It’s now a world ruled by the legendary emperor, Treanthor, where technology is limited, education is discouraged and children become adults on their thirteenth birthday. What would you do in such a situation?

annie carterWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

After university I took a gap year to join a little school of performing arts in Birmingham, learning drama and performance skills. We put on community theatre at local schools and other venues and went on a tour in Holland, which included some street theatre. At the end of the year we performed our own skits and songs at the Midlands Arts Centre. I wrote some of the material but was pretty terrified of doing some dance and movement pieces.

Have you ever written naked?

No, it’s far too cold in my Edwardian house for that! However, I’ve been known to write semi clad, late at night under the bed covers, tapping away a few paragraphs into my phone. (Inspiration frequently comes at night, ugh!)

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

I don’t look anything like her, but it would have be fun to have Sandra Bullock. She’d ensure it wasn’t too serious and be able to reflect some of the craziness of my life. (That involves anything from hitchhiking in Germany to talking to the house rabbit I used to have, or learning to rollerblade in New York’s central park!)

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Staying focused on creating while my Dad was continuing to degenerate due to thyroid cancer. After he died in early 2012, I felt compelled to hurry up and finish the manuscript, despite the feelings of grief and sadness. It was cathartic to write at this time, despite the stress of it all, working towards something worthwhile, something that he would have been proud of.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Create an outline for your novel so you know where each chapter is heading and you have something to work towards. If it changes as you go along, that’s fine, but having an outline helps give focus. Also – if you’re a first time novelist – find an editor or writing coach and follow a number of good writing blogs. There’s so much to learn!

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

I think it would have to be good use of English grammar. I had an excellent teacher, Mr Smart, who drummed into the class the difference between it’s and its, when to use a semicolon and how to use parentheses correctly. I think that has stood me in good stead for all my writing pursuits.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

A hot mug of Earl Grey tea during the day, sometimes a glass of wine if it’s later in the evening after the kids are in bed. White or red, depending on the mood. As I don’t drink coffee at all, I sometimes feel like a social pariah amongst all the gourmet coffee fans.
