Welcoming Fiona Ross, author of Far Out, to the Thursday Throng

This week I’d like to welcome Fiona Ross to the Thursday Throng hotseat who is giving away a free ebook copy of her book Far Out. To be in with a chance of winning all you need to do is leave a comment at the end of this post. Fiona lives in the West Country and had always wanted to be a writer and her favorite genres are science fiction, horror and mystery/supernatural.

The Review

Far OutFar out is a tale set in the slightly altered future world of the West Country. On the one hand we have those who live on the margins of society; on the other, those who live in Server City. The contrast between them is as vivid as life and death. At the core of this unusual tale are some real truths that we should all consider paying attention to: the way we use the planet to our own advantage, the implications of an ever advancing technology and the basic human needs of companionship, love, friendship and self sacrifice. The ending is a challenging surprise suggesting there may well be room for a sequel.

The Fiona Ross Interview

Fiona Faith RossWhat is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I used to be a stage lighting designer.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Very. Usually they arrive and tell me their names. A name is part of the essence of a person.

How did you choose a title for your book?

The title is the hardest thing to find, but in the case of Far Out, it was the play on words that intrigued me and inspired the theme.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

The strain on the body, the RSI from working the mouse, the back strain and the stiffness. Awful. Not to mention the need to keep up an exercise routine to keep the weight off.

Have you ever written naked?

Absolutely not, although I frequently never shed the dressing gown to put on proper clothes.  I can’t think of anything more uncomfortable than a bare bum on a sticky office chair.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Not really. Develop a thick skin and stock up with chocolate. You’ll have to suffer the slings and arrows with the rest of us. Remember to drink enough. Writing dehydrates you.  Seriously though, write because you love it, for no other reason.

How do you remain sane while working?

I don’t think I have. A fiction writer is just a sad person with a bunch of imaginary friends.

What is the best excuse you have ever come up with for missing a deadline?

I don’t miss deadlines.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

Graduating from uni with my degree in Information Technology and after that, snorkelling in Fiji.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

I would strap it to a rocket and send it into space. With any luck the atmosphere would burn it up.

Thanks ever so, Linda, for this opportunity to appear on your blog. If anybody would like to ask more questions about Far Out, or about Saffron and her Dad, please feel free. I am currently putting the final touches to another science fiction novel, and shortly I start work on the second book in Saffron’s story.

I enjoyed Far Out, as you both know, and am pleased to hear there’ll be a sequel!

Fiona, I can’t believe you’ve never written naked – not even the odd paragraph in bed in the middle of the night?! 😉

I agree, the title is crucially important and can be so difficult to get right. I love titles which play on words!

I think you have to love writing to do it. There has to be joy and reward from all the pain and emotion and work we put into it. 😉
