Kim MayaThe Interview

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Hm… that’s a really tough one. I actually had to ask a friend.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life

I used to think that should be Meg Ryan, then for a while, I thought maybe Kirsten Dunst. But then, after some conversations with Carol E Wyer, a wonderful fellow author, I remembered that learning new things is what life’s all about and the answer to this question comes natural now: ME!

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Yes! Don’t think of yourself as aspiring. You might be at the beginning of your career, but if you write, you’re a writer. If you haven’t written yet, you aren’t. It’s that simple really. You wouldn’t be aspiring though, after all, if you want to start a new company and you’ve bought all the equipment and now you’re looking for customers, you wouldn’t tell them you’re an aspiring so-and-so either, would you? Believe in yourself! Dress for what you want to be and not what you are and call yourself what you are! An author! A writer! A journalist! Never an aspiring anybody.

How do you remain sane while working?

I think I missed that memo! Nobody told me I was supposed to stay sane, so I think it’s too late now. My personal level of craziness I can maintain by doing a lot of different things, constantly learning, changing, moving. I love the challenge of role switching within a matter of heartbeats. I also love to surprise people when, for example, they think I won’t understand them when they speak a different language and I can, in fact, respond to something they say. If I ever need some time doing something to calm me down, I go down to the ocean, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the open vastness of it. That helps me focus.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

The Princes of the Nile is next on my list. I wish I had written it already because then I could go about marketing it now without having to consider the way of writing it anymore. But don’t worry, I’ll get there! It’s the story of how I met Will, and what brought us together despite all circumstances…

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Any and lots of it! Seriously, I drink about 4 liters per day. No, Will MMJ, not 4 liters of whiskey… 4 liters of water and tea. Not each, together. Get out of my head and tell me how you got in there in the first place. I can just hear you taking my answers apart. Anyway, digressing here. I need to drink a lot water and tea; if I don’t, I get a headache. When I do, I can easily top off the day with a nice glass of Chateau Neuf du Pape. Not that I regularly do, but that’s my preferred drop to a perfect day.

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I was a bit less me. Wouldn’t life be easier if I could have one of those 9tofivers, go to work, do some stuff for someone else, leave and forget about all worries? Get my paycheck, spend it and enjoy the process?  I’m not sure what job that would be but sometimes I think that all these choices that are supposed to liberate us don’t actually do that. Instead, they make it harder. For all the choices, we sometimes don’t know what’s best for us and might not actually chose the one thing we would have enjoyed the most.

I think I would’ve fit perfectly in the 18th century, to be a homemaker, a fabric expert, a manager of a large household. It seems that apart from it simply no longer being the 18th century, I never had the choice though. I was meant to be educated and now crave ever more of that drug. To come back to the question: I sometimes wish I could just lean back, no longer crave to know more and just enjoy life.
