This week I’d like to welcome Charlotte Howard to the Thursday Throng author interview. Charlotte is the author Seven Dirty Words, a chick lit book that has been likened to 50 Shades of Grey by some reviewers. She was originally born in Oman, moving to the UK in 1989 before finally settling in Somerset in 2008 with her husband, two children, and growing menagerie of pets.

seven dirty wordsThe Review

Charlotte has selected an interesting heroine for her story; a rugby playing tomboy who does mixed martial arts, is small with a curvy figure, thick thighs and a slightly pug nose isn’t the typical image portrayed in most chick lit novels where the heroines tend towards the dramatically beautiful. And I think this is where the greatest strength of the novel lies as Paige feels like a well-rounded individual with an interesting character that means she will appeal to many different readers. The twists and turns of the story make for what would be a good holiday read.

Charlotte shares some interesting responses to the questions she chose, and I’d urge readers not to be worried next time she visits if she happens to have an icicle in her hand ……!

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Hmm…  I’m usually pretty open about most things, so that’s a tricky one!  I’d probably go for my fear of chickens.   I was pecked by one when I was a child, and since then I’ve been terrified of them.  To the point that I will happily cross a road just so I don’t have to walk past one!!

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

Becoming what my husband calls a ‘Grammar Nazi’.  I’m constantly correcting his grammar and spelling, to the point where I will send his email/text back to him with the corrections in it.

Have you ever written naked?

Naked?  No.  Wrapped in a towel because I had a sudden burst of inspiration whilst in the shower and I had to get it onto paper / screen?  Yes.  Sat in my pyjamas because I couldn’t be bothered to get dressed?  Yes.  Naked?  No.  Not yet.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Actually finishing it and not procrastinating on Facebook!

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

A question I’ve been asked many times over the past week and the answer stays the same – join your local creative writers group, and don’t rely on friends and family for constructive criticism.

How do you remain sane while working?

Tea.  It also features heavily in SEVEN DIRTY WORDS.  Tea solves everything according to my Mum, and if I’m sat at my PC with an open word document, you can bet that there is a large mug of tea beside the keyboard!

Are you jealous of other writers?

Extremely.  Particularly those who have their first books go viral & earn billions.  No names.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

Not to tell a teacher ‘Those who can, do, those who can’t, teach’ – all it does is lead to you getting a D when you could have got an A.

If you could commit the perfect murder where would you hide the body?

I’d feed them to my dog.  That’s after I’ve killed them using an icicle (no murder weapon if it’s melted!) and chopped them up in a kill room (I watch far too much Dexter).  No murder weapon, no evidence, no body.  I scare myself sometimes!
