Whimsical, is a lovely word that seems to hark back to childhood when everything was lovely, nice and full of fairy tales with happy endings. However, it does have it’s darker side as we shall see in the rest of the post.

My alternative meaning for the word whimsical is “a calorie counter that judges the difference in consumption rates based on your gender“. Go on, what’s your alternative meaning?

This week’s word is WHIMSICAL, it is an ADJECTIVE and is pronounced ‘hwim-zee-cull’

The word whimsical means one who is given to fanciful notions or flights of fancy, often not based in the real world. It can also mean erratic and unpredictable behaviour. When applied to things like fairy tales it can mean unusual, fantastical or even quaint.
Examples of the word Whimsical
  • Her writing was a jumble of sights, sounds and flights of whimsical fancy

Origins of the word Whimsical

The word whimsical was first known in the 1650’s and derives from the word Whimsy meaning odd or capricious.

Why the Weekly Word?

The idea of the Weekly Word comes from Toastmasters International. At each meeting we have a Grammarian whose role is to encourage members to try out new words that stretch our vocabulary, as well as to monitor and report back on people’s use of language. If you would like to see previous Weekly Words on this blog and try out your own alternative meanings, you can find them all listed here: the-weekly-word
