As every month does, July has provided me with some insights and understandings about ‘how things work’ when it comes to life, books and marketing in general. It started in a sombre mood for me when I was trying to come to terms with the negative reviews that my novel had received on Amazon. However, after posting my Lesson Learned In June – On Developing a Very Thick Skin blog I was overwhelmed by the response I received; not only as comments to the post but as messages on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and by email. Almost every one of them was supportive of continuing with testing my inner storyteller and almost all told me, in no uncertain terms, to ‘get over it‘ and stop making such a fuss because not everyone is going to like your book – and that’s OK.
Having that wake up call and response gave me the clarity to see that I had indeed been making a mountain out of a molehill and I now look at the negative reviews and think – ‘it’s OK, they just don’t like it!’ My equanimity has returned and as a result I’m a much happier bunny.
Therefore I want to say is an enormous THANK YOU to everyone that took the time to share their thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences with me.
Sharing in this way is hugely cathartic for both the sharer and the sharee (I’m not sure that’s actually a word!). Not only does the sharer benefit from other people’s perspectives but the person responding benefits from hearing about the writers experiences – adding it to their own understanding. I suppose over the years I’ve shared in this way many times simply because of running the Hysterectomy Association, you can’t keep on having conversations about poo, wind and sex without being comfortable talking about these subjects in public 🙂
Which means it came as a surprise when one of my connections on LinkedIn revealed during an email exchange that ours was the first conversation she had ever had with someone on LinkedIn. It made me stop and think because I’d assumed (and we all know where that get’s us) that everyone was in conversation and sharing mode all the time – just as I was. But perhaps it’s rarer than I think and the reason I don’t see it is because I force the issue by chatting away to anyone and everyone.
I shall have to think on this some more because I’m sure there is some learning in there that I haven’t yet gleaned but when I do I’ll be sure to share it.
Let me give you an example of how sharing can be beneficial. You are probably familiar with my Thursday Throng interviews; the purpose of them is to give other authors a voice and a platform that may help them a little more. I don’t judge the people who come along and ask to be included, I don’t make assumptions about them and most of all I don’t ban anyone (the only thing I won’t review is horror and erotica – but the authors could still do an interview).
A few weeks ago I received an email from Haresh who runs one of their groups by email – it was a standard message sent out to every member of the group and I responded to it by explaining a little about my Thursday Throng. Haresh shared my information with his group and as a result my Thursday’s are now booked up until the end of the year … I’m looking for one last interview on the last Thursday of 2012 and then I’m into 2013!
That response came about because I shared something I’m doing with someone else who shared it with the people he knows – and that, is social marketing in a nutshell 🙂 It’s just a conversation with other people.
