Over the last few months I’ve ‘met’ some wonderful people with my Thursday Throng interviews and Julie Rainy, today’s guest is no exception. She was wonderfully effervescent when I did an interview with Michael Cargill a few weeks ago as it seems they have become great friends and she teases him mercilessly (sorry Michael, I had to get that one in). She is in the middle of writing a trilogy called The Lost Princess and this interview introduces the first of the three books, Lost Princess, The Journey Home. They are a blend of sci-fi and fantasy and the all important main character is a strong female lead who goes by the name of Isabella.
The Journey Home is the story of Anne who, eighteen years after two caring strangers decided to take her in, is faced with the harsh reality that everything in her life has been a complete and utter fabrication. With the help of her friend and Protector, she sets out on a journey back home, to a planet she never even knew existed. Will she be able to defeat the terrifying evil that awaits her and uncover the truth about what’s really happening there before it’s too late?
Hi Julie, I normally start all these interviews with an attempt to elicit a little information that others may not know with my first question ‘What is One thing that No-One Normally Knows About You?’
Although I profusely claim not to be a girly girl, I secretly do like to dress up. I just don’t that often. Too much work. (Linda’s aside: I know exactly what you mean!)
What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?
The biggest challenge I faced while writing my book was most definitely time. Time was always against me. I’d try to write and a thousand other to-do’s popped up but eventually I persevered and was able to complete the first book and I’m happy to say I’m marching along with the second and third.
Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?
*Be brave. The hardest part is getting started. Take a deep breath and go for it.
*Don’t give up. If this is a passion for you, don’t let the speed bumps in life stop you.
*Have thick skin. Not everyone is going to love what you write and take their criticism in a constructive way.
How do you remain sane while working?
I don’t. (Linda’s Aside: Oh that sounds interesting and I could ask some very leading questions here but I’ll avoid them …. for now :-)
Where do you find your inspiration?
My inspiration for this particular book series strangely enough came from an Astronomy class I took in high school. I had a very close friend who took the class with me and one day we decided to mess with the teacher a bit. We were studying constellations and we each had to pick a particular constellation to research and then give a presentation on it. I picked Orion and it just so happened that on my arm, in freckles, you could distinctly pick out the design of Orion. Weird, I know. We presented this to the teacher amidst giggles which only garnered us a strange look. Once we had returned to our seats, we theorized that I was actually from Orion. That was nearly ten years ago but the story stuck with me and I eventually expanded on it with the encouragement of the same friend.
Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?
*Sigh* Well… I bite my fingernails. It’s terrible, I know. I actually stopped for a brief time but I just couldn’t keep going.

Why ‘The Thursday Throng’?
These posts are called The Thursday Throng in honour of the throng that waits eagerly outside the book store when a new author is doing a book signing event or appearance.
