Well, Michelle and I have finally completed the report and you can download it from the website to read at your leisure. It threw up some very interesting findings as well and certainly lays down a challenge to the Recruitment industry about how they could (or is that should) be taking the opportunities that seem to be developing around Social Media far more seriously than they may well be doing. The winner is …!
Michelle Fischer and I promised that after today’s BusinessXchange meeting we would reveal who the winner of the bottle of champagne was following the social media and recruitment survey. And the winner is ….. Bill Boorman. Congratulations Bill.
Laura McHarrie of the Brilliant BusinessXchange drew out the winning email address in front of the entire BXC audience.
Social Media in Recruitment – Initial Results
What an interesting outcome from the social media in recruitment survey, there are some very surprising results which require a lot more analysis, but here is the bare bones version. A much fuller report will be available after the Christmas Holidays as it is going to take some time to tease everything out of the information that Michelle Fischer and I now have.
- The vast majority of companies recruit for less that 5 vacancies per year
- The most popular ways to recruit are Job Boards and Employee Referrals
- BUT – social media is EQUAL with the use of recruitment agencies coming in third place for popularity
- The vast majority of companies spend less than £500 on recruitment – regardless of the position being filled
- Almost 90% of respondents said their companies had used social media within the business
- YET just over 50% have used it in recruitment
- The top driver for using social media in recruitment is ‘reducing costs’
- Overwhelmingly though, businesses do NOT have a policy in place for using social media in their business – isn’t this a bit risky perhaps?
Keep an eye out in the New Year for the complete report and analysis which will also be emailed out to respondents who have requested it.
Social Networking in Recruitment
Preliminary results from the ongoing survey being conducted by myself and Michelle Fischer of Creative Leadership are showing a number of interesting statistics. Of course, we can’t say that these will be findings when the survey completes in a couple of weeks time, but they are worthy of note at this stage we feel.
- 40% of the respondents have said that they recruited for less than five vacancies in the last 12 months
- None of the respondents had advertised on the radio in the last 12 months
- The vast majority spend less than £500 on a recruitment campaign
- Although over 72% of respondents said thay have used social media in business already this hasn’t been replicated in recruitment
- The main reasons for using social media, where it has been used in recruitment are for cost and just to experiment
- The main reason giving for not using social media in recruitment was lack of knowledge
- And perhaps most surprising of all, respondents indicated that they DO NOT have policies for social media in place
Whilst these results don’t mean anything in themselves, they do give an indicator of where the drivers are, what the current trends are and where the opportunities for improvement lie.
Social Media + Recruitment = free bottle of champagne for winner
If you are involved in the recruitment industry then we’d love it if you took part in a survey that a colleague of mine and I are undertaking. The survey is on Survey Monkey and we’re asking questions related to YOUR business use of Social Media when you are recruiting new staff. It is completely anonymous, unless you would like to receive the report and/or be in with a chance of winning a bottle of Champagne.

The closing date for the survey is Friday 18th December 2009 and we’ll be producing a couple of reports as a result of it, that look at the responses and what this means for the future direction of the whole business of recruitment. And don’t forget, one lucky respondent will win a bottle of the very best champagne.
Social Media & Recruitment = champagne
It’s no surprise that the way we communicate with people is changing. Some call it the Communication Revolution and it’s characterised largely by the use of Web 2.0 technology and websites such as LinkedIn and Facebook, otherwise known as Social Networking and Media.
With this in mind, myself and a colleague, Michelle Fischer of Creative Leadership would like to invite you to help us research the trends that are taking place with the context of social media and recruitment by completing the questionnaire at Survey Monkey below. We’ll be asking questions about YOUR business use of Social Media when recruiting new staff. It is completely anonymous, unless you would like to receive the report and/or be in with a chance of winning a bottle of Champagne.
